Watch Dolly Parton and Patti LaBelle Playing Music With Their Acrylic Nails in 1987

Dolly Parton and Patti LaBelle are legendary musicians with successful careers and powerful voices. Dolly Parton, a country music icon, is known for her songwriting and hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.” Patti LaBelle, an R&B and soul singer, gained fame with songs like “Lady Marmalade” and “On My Own.” Both artists have received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to music. Parton is also recognized for her acting and philanthropy work, while LaBelle has ventured into various genres and appeared in films and television shows. Their enduring talent and charismatic personalities have made them beloved figures in the entertainment industry.

Back in 1987, Dolly invited Patti to join her for an episode of her variety show and the two got to talking about songwriting and how Dolly make the most of what’s around her if she has an idea but no guitar.

“I write a lot of songs when I don’t have my guitar,” Dolly said. “I beat around the dashboard of my car when I’m riding around writing songs but then I have a little rhythm that we can do with these acrylic nails. Can you do that?”

The pair then launched into a version of folk song “Shortnin’ Bread” using just their nails as percussion.

Obviously, they planned on doing this bit, Patti even said so, but that doesn’t take away from what the two were able to do with nothing more than their voices and nails.
