Before 1975, there were great differences in fashion styles between the North and the South, especially in Saigon. In addition to the newly-changed ao dai, the women of Saigon also adopted Western attire and donned jeans, miniskirts and short dresses with such variety of materials, designs, sizes, shades and colors. Other common statements during this era were headbands, sunglasses as well as big hair and thick eyeliner.
