37 Glamorous Photos of Grace Kelly in the 1950s

Grace Kelly was born in 1929 to John Brandon Kelly and Margaret Katherine Majer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a young girl, Kelly began her career by acting in plays and participating in fashion events while attending the Catholic girls’ school Ravenhill Academy. Despite her parents’ initial disapproval, Kelly decided to pursue her dream by enrolling in the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Her success on television finally landed her first film role in “Fourteen Hours.” Kelly’s next major mation picture with Gary Cooper, “High Noon,” though ranked among the best films of all time, was not the one that made her a movie star. It was her performance in the 1953 film “Mogambo” that earned her stardom, along with the first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1955, she eventually won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “The Country Girl.”

At the height of her fame, Kelly took a fateful trip to the Cannes Film Festival as the head of the United States Delegation Committee in 1955. It was at a magazine shoot in the seaside town that she first met Prince Rainier III. In January 1956, their engagement was announced and their highly publicized wedding ceremony was hold on April 19 of the same year. Kelly was 26 years old when she retired from acting to begin her duties as Princess of Monaco. She died on September 14, 1982 after suffering from a stroke while driving back to Monaco, which led to the fatal crash.
