12 Fascinating Portraits of Andy Warhol With a Giant Sunflower, 1981

Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. The artist was already at a comfortably legendary point in September 1981, when by chance, a young English photographer was connected with him to shoot a series of portraits.

That photographer was Steve Wood and, for the past 30 years he thought little of this brief project until a friend uncovered the photos.

Steve Wood shot the photos in 1981 at La Belle Époque style Royal Hotel in the French town of Deauville. Filing the 35mm negatives under ‘W’, the images lay undisturbed in a cabinet until 2012.

Using natural light, Wood caught the characteristically shy Warhol facing the camera lens with an unflinching gaze, alongside a sunflower and backpack as props.
