Fascinating Photos Capture Malacca Street Scenes in the Early 1970s

In the early 1970s, the streets of Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia, offered a vivid glimpse into the city’s blend of history, culture, and everyday life. Narrow roads were lined with colonial-era shophouses, their weathered facades displaying a mix of Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Peranakan architectural influences. The streets bustled with bicycles, trishaws, and the occasional old car, painting a slower rhythm compared to Malaysia’s rapidly modernizing capital.

Vendors and hawkers filled the sidewalks with stalls selling food, produce, and handmade goods, while children played along the quiet lanes and riverside. The air carried the scents of traditional Nyonya cuisine, Chinese herbal shops, and Malay snacks, reflecting Malacca’s multicultural identity.

These fascinating photos, taken by Wilford Peloquin in 1971, capture street scenes in Malacca at a time when it was still largely a local trading town, long before becoming a major tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Australian Army Jeep Train Pulling Members of the 24th Infantry Brigade in Borneo, Malaysia, 1945

Manufactured by Willys Overland Motors and mass-produced between 1941 and 1945 for the Allied forces, the iconic, tough and all-terrain Willys MB embodies the true Jeep spirit, “Go anywhere, Do anything,” in this photo taken on July 22, 1945 on the Island of Borneo – base of the 24th Australian Infantry Brigade, fighting a dug in Japanese army at the fag end of the war.

Though the concept of automobiles pulling railcars can be traced back to 1912, it was the Jeep that made it famous and also lent it the name of the Jeep Train. The Willys MB that pulls the railcars in the photo was known as the Mumbuktu Special. The soldiers of the 24th Australian Infantry used it for ferrying troops as well as for transporting rock and gravel from the quarry of Greig Siding, 12 miles North of their station at Beaufort – now a Malaysian city.

Besides Willys Overland Motors, the Jeep was also mass-produced during the war by the Ford Motor Company. The models produced by the two respective companies were classed as off-road light military utility vehicles and extensively used by the Allied armies.

To adhere to the army’s request for a standardised light combat vehicle, both models were built to be identical so parts of one could be used for the other – yet there were subtle differences. The most notable among which was the cross member in front. While on the Willys MB, the cross member was rounded, that of the Ford GPW was square.

Both the models had weighed approximately 1/4 of a ton and were the most relied upon and loved of all combat vehicles to be used in World War II. Furthermore, they were also instrumental in popularizing the word Jeep – which is now used, offhandedly, for all 4x4s.

Photos of Malacca, Malaysia in 1971

Malacca is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca. The state is bordered by Negeri Sembilan to the north and west and Johor to the south. The exclave of Tanjung Tuan also borders Negeri Sembilan to the north. Its capital is Malacca City, which is 148 kilometres (92 miles) southeast of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 kilometres (146 miles) northwest of Johor’s largest city Johor Bahru and 95 km (59 miles) northwest of Johor’s second largest city, Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.

Malacca is famous for its unique history and is one of the major tourist destinations in Malaysia. With a highly strategic state position for international trade routes, Malacca was once a well-known international trade centre in the East. Many traders anchored in Malacca, especially traders from Arabia, China and India, traded at the port of Malacca and from there were born many of the descendants and tribes that exist in Malacca to this day.

A great diversity of races and ethnicities have long existed among the local community. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Baba Nyonya, Kristang, Chitty and Eurasians are major ethnic groups living in the State of Malacca up to the present day.

These vintage photos were captured by wilford peloquin that show street scenes of Malacca in 1971.

Everyday Life of Malaya in the Early 1960s Through a Surveyor's Lens

Malaya is a former country in Southeast Asia that consists of the southern part of the Malay Peninsula and some adjacent islands (originally including Singapore) and that now forms the western part of the federation of Malaysia and is known as West Malaysia.

The area was colonized by the Dutch, Portuguese, and the British, who eventually dominated; the several Malay states federated under British control in 1896. The country became independent in 1957, and the federation expanded and became Malaysia in 1963.

These photos of Malaya from John Laurie were taken by Neil Cranston Laurie and Olwen Francis Laurie in 1961 and 1962 when Neil was working from Mentakab and Kuala Lumpur as a Colombo Plan surveyor.

28 Interesting Photographs Capture Street Scenes of Penang, Malaysia in the Early 1980s

The name of "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means "island of the areca nut palm". The name Penang may refer either to the island of Penang (Pulau Pinang) or the state of Penang (Negeri Pulau Pinang).

Located at the intersection of Asia’s great kingdoms and and Europe's powerful colonial empires, the island of Penang has long served as the link between Asia’s two halves and an important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East.

These 28 interesting color photographs of Penang were taken by Japanese photographer Doi Kuro in 1984.
