The 1996 romantic comedy One Fine Day paired George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer as two stressed, single parents navigating a chaotic day in New York City. While their on-screen dynamic delivered classic screwball chemistry, behind the scenes, production came with a few memorable mishaps.

Clooney admitted in a 2020 reunion interview that he accidentally filmed a key dialogue scene while still intoxicated. Having a rare day off, he stayed up drinking vodkas with his friend Rande Gerber. When called in unexpectedly early at 5:00 AM, he realized he was still drunk. Pfeiffer immediately called him out, noting he “smelled like a distillery,” prompting Clooney to continuously use mouth spray between takes.

Mid-shoot, Clooney played a pickup basketball game with crew members during lunch and took an elbow to the face, breaking his orbital eye socket. To avoid delaying production, director Michael Hoffman shot upcoming scenes by creatively blocking half of Clooney’s face using props or positioning child actors in front of him.

Pfeiffer wasn’t just the co-star; she was also an executive producer on the film through her production company, Via Rosa Productions. She took an active role in shaping the project and casting. At the time, Clooney was transitioning from TV star (ER) to a Hollywood movie lead. He noted that auditioning for Pfeiffer for One Fine Day was the last time in his career he ever had to read for a role. Funnily enough, they had actually met way back in 1982 when Clooney was dating Michelle’s sister, Dedee Pfeiffer.

Filmed across 44 locations in Manhattan, including Central Park, Bethesda Terrace, and the Circle Line, the actors spent months dealing with live NYC crowds and fast-paced street setups. The film’s premiere was pushed up from a planned February release to a rushed Christmas slot. Opening to a disappointing $4 million, it ended up losing its box-office battle to Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. However, both actors noted that it has since grown into a beloved, nostalgic staple of the 90s rom-com genre.
