Michèle Morgan in the 1940s: 35 Elegant Portraits of the Star of French Cinema

Michèle Morgan (1920–2016), born Simone Renée Roussel, was a leading French film actress whose career spanned over three decades, making her one of the most celebrated figures in 20th-century French cinema.

Morgan rose to fame with her iconic role as Nelly in the classic film Port of Shadows (Le Quai des brumes, 1938) opposite Jean Gabin. Known for her striking beauty and expressive, often melancholic eyes, she successfully navigated both French and Hollywood features, notably appearing in the American film Passage to Marseille (1944) alongside Humphrey Bogart.

Morgan’s talent was formally recognized when she became the inaugural winner of the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946 for La Symphonie pastorale. Her distinction, elegance, and powerful screen presence solidified her status as a cinema legend in France, where she was affectionately referred to as the actress with “the most beautiful eyes in the world.”
