40 Photos of a Young Dave Mustaine of Megadeth in the 1980s and 1990s

Dave Mustaine was the co-founder, frontman, primary songwriter, and sole consistent member of Megadeth during the 1980s and 1990s. His time in the band during this era established them as one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. This period was marked by both creative triumphs and significant personal struggles, particularly with substance abuse.

After being fired from Metallica in 1983, Mustaine formed Megadeth with bassist David Ellefson. Driven by a desire to create a faster and heavier band than his former one, he quickly established Megadeth’s signature sound, which combined intricate guitar work, complex musical arrangements, and aggressive, politically charged lyrics.

The band’s debut album, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, was released in 1985. It showcased Mustaine’s blistering guitar solos and frantic tempos, immediately making a name for the band in the underground metal scene.

Megadeth’s first major-label album, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? in 1986, became a thrash metal landmark. The title track’s iconic bassline and socio-political commentary became a staple of MTV’s Headbangers Ball and solidified the band’s place in the genre.

In 1988, the album So Far, So Good... So What! was released. While successful, the period was plagued by substance abuse issues and frequent lineup changes, which were a constant struggle for Mustaine and the band.

In the 1980s, wild and long strawberry-blond/red hair, often frizzy or wavy, with bangs that gave him a fierce, untamed look. Denim and leather jackets, band T-shirts, tight ripped jeans, studded belts, and high-top sneakers or boots.

The 1990s saw Megadeth achieve their greatest commercial success, with Mustaine leading the charge in a more stable lineup that included Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums. Rust in Peace (1990) is widely regarded as one of Megadeth’s finest albums and a masterpiece of the thrash metal genre. The album, featuring complex and technical songs like “Holy Wars... The Punishment Due” and “Hangar 18,” earned the band their first Grammy Award nomination.

Released in 1992, the album Countdown to Extinction marked a shift towards a more commercial, streamlined metal sound. It was their most commercially successful album, reaching double-platinum status and featuring hit singles like “Symphony of Destruction” and “Sweating Bullets.”

Youthanasia (1994) continued the band’s more accessible sound, debuting in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. Cryptic Writings (1997) was another commercial success, blending elements of hard rock and heavy metal. The decade concluded with Risk (1999), which explored a more experimental and alternative rock sound, a move that alienated some of their core fan base but showcased Mustaine’s willingness to evolve.
