Renée Breton (1928–1979) was a French fashion model best known as one of Christian Dior’s original “house mannequins.” She began working with Dior in 1947 at just 19 years old and quickly became the living embodiment of his revolutionary “New Look.” Breton famously wore the iconic “Bar jacket” in a defining image captured by photographer Willy Maywald, helping to establish the visual identity of postwar Parisian couture.
Dior once described her as having “an exact equivalence between her proportions and those of my imagination,” highlighting the perfect harmony between designer and model. Breton was admired not only for her elegance and poise but also for her quiet professionalism—she avoided publicity, preferred to take the bus home from fittings, and kept a humble routine despite her pivotal role in fashion history.
After Dior’s death in 1957, Breton moved to New York and signed with Ford Models, bringing her refined presence to the American fashion world. She worked with top photographers and appeared in major publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and L’Officiel. Later in her career, she transitioned into roles in fashion sales and retail, including at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Breton passed away in 1979 in New York, leaving behind a legacy as one of mid-century fashion’s most iconic and understated figures. Take a look at these glamorous photos to see portraits of Renée Breton as a model from the 1950s.
