Peggy Fleming is a retired American figure skater who won the gold medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics—the only U.S. gold that year.
Born in 1948, Fleming rose to prominence after a 1961 plane crash devastated the U.S. skating team. Coached by Carlo Fassi, she became a symbol of hope and grace in the sport. After her Olympic win, she had a successful professional career and later became a breast cancer survivor and advocate.
Fleming is a member of both the U.S. Olympic and World Figure Skating Halls of Fame. Take a look these beautiful photos to see portraits of a young Peggy Fleming in the 1960s.
