30 Romantic Photos of Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal on the Set of “Love Story” (1970)

Love Story (1970), starring Ali MacGraw as Jennifer Cavalleri and Ryan O’Neal as Oliver Barrett IV, is one of the most iconic romantic dramas in American cinema. Directed by Arthur Hiller and written by Erich Segal (who also wrote the bestselling novel the film is based on), the movie became a cultural phenomenon and defined a generation's idea of tragic romance.

In the movie which is widely seen as the birth of the ‘chick-flick’, the pair played lovers who come from total opposite backgrounds and O’ Neal’s well-to-do father did not want his son to marry his true love. O’Neal recalled several scenes in the movie where he had the opportunity to kiss MacGraw. He talked about how he believed she was his first real love, even though the two never dated.

During the filming of the movie, MacGraw was married to film producer Robert Evans, so O’Neal couldn’t make any moves outside of the fictional setting. But it never stopped the actress from taking serious the romance on the screen with O’Neal.

When asked about their amazing chemistry, she said: “First of all, he’s a great kisser, let’s start with that. It’s a combination of somebody who’s incredibly sexy but funny. That’s just electrifying.”

“For me, I was stumblebum at the end of the day... I was so sad because her husband might be in town.” Eventually, O’ Neal met and fell in love with Farrah Fawcett, but said on Oprah in 2010 that MacGraw has always been his obsession and truly was his first love.

The film is considered one of the most romantic by the American Film Institute (No. 9 on the list) and is one of the highest-grossing films of all time adjusted for inflation.
