Jackson was sixteen when she began recording the album. She was assisted by her father, working with a number of songwriters and producers. Songwriters Angela Winbush and René Moore contributed to much of the album's lyrics. Moore and Winbush share production credits with Foster Sylvers, Jerry Weaver, and Bobby Watson.
The cover photo was shot by renowned photographer Harry Langdon in the swimming pool at the Jackson family’s home in Encino, California. The concept was inspired by a photograph of actress Elizabeth Taylor submerged in water, which Janet found dramatic and wished to emulate. Due to her shyness, Janet waited for the crew to be distracted before slipping into the pool for the shoot, and she remained in the water until everyone had left.
The resulting image, showcasing Janet’s face emerging from the water surrounded by flowers, became the cover art for her self-titled debut album. This photoshoot marked the beginning of Janet’s visual identity in her music career.
