Generation X was a British punk rock band formed in 1976 and is best known as the launching pad for Billy Idol, who would go on to become a major solo star in the 1980s. The band was part of the first wave of UK punk and stood out for their blend of punk energy with a more melodic, pop-oriented sound.
Generation X was formed in London by vocalist Billy Idol (real name William Broad), bassist Tony James, guitarist Bob “Derwood” Andrews, and drummer John Towe. The name came from a 1965 sociology book about youth culture. Idol took the name after seeing it on his mother’s bookshelf.
Their first gig as Generation X was in December 1976 at Central London’s Roxy Club, a central venue in the early punk scene. And here, below is a gallery of 50 amazing photographs of the band on stage from the late 1970s:
