Ann Pennington was a popular American actress, dancer, and Ziegfeld Follies star during the early 20th century. Born 1893, in Wilmington, Delaware, she rose to fame in the 1910s and 1920s through her performances on Broadway and in musical revues.
Pennington was best known for her work in the Ziegfeld Follies and George White’s Scandals, where her petite stature, vibrant personality, and exceptional dancing—particularly her mastery of the “black bottom” and “charleston” dances—made her a standout performer. She was often billed as the “Shake and Quiver Queen” due to her energetic and expressive dance style.
Though she appeared in a number of silent films, Pennington’s film career never quite matched the success she enjoyed on stage. Nonetheless, she was an influential figure in early American entertainment and helped popularize jazz-age dance styles. She passed away in 1971, in New York City.
