Vintage Photos of Johnny Mack Brown During the Filming of “Billy the Kid” (1930)

Billy the Kid (1930) is a Western film directed by King Vidor and based on The Saga of Billy the Kid by Walter Noble Burns. It stars John Mack Brown as Billy the Kid and Wallace Beery as Pat Garrett.

Set in the late 1870s New Mexico Territory, the story follows Billy as he defends settlers against a corrupt cattle baron and clashes with his friend-turned-lawman, Garrett. The film was notable for its early use of widescreen (Realife) technology, though only standard versions survive today.

In February 2020, the film was shown at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival, as part of a retrospective dedicated to King Vidor’s career. Take a look at these vintage photos to see portraits of Johnny Mack Brown during the filming of Billy the Kid in 1930.
