Janette Beckman photographed Sting, particularly for a Greatest Hits album in 1991 and also for the Police’s first album cover, capturing iconic moments in his career. Sting has said that the photo for the Police album cover was created by the band figuring out the shot together, and that none of them knew that the photograph would become so iconic
“I did the first Police album cover,” said Janette Beckman. “I got this great quote from Sting—he said ‘We were just three guys standing in a tunnel. None of us knew that this photograph would become so iconic.’ We were all figuring out the shot together. When you’re photographing someone that is already a legend, it’s a whole other situation: you’ve got the manager, the hair, makeup artist, stylist.”
Beckman’s photography has been widely recognized and exhibited, with her works included in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of the City of New York, and the British National Portrait Gallery. Her collaborations with artists like Sting highlight her significant role in documenting the evolution of music and fashion.
