22 Vintage Photos of Janet Leigh on the Set of “Touch of Evil” (1958)

Touch of Evil is a 1958 American film noir written and directed by Orson Welles, who also stars. The screenplay was loosely based on Whit Masterson’s novel Badge of Evil (1956). The cast included Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff and Marlene Dietrich.

The story follows Mexican narcotics officer Mike Vargas (Charlton Heston) and his wife Susie (Janet Leigh) as they become entangled in a murder investigation. At the center of the mystery is corrupt U.S. police captain Hank Quinlan (Welles), who manipulates evidence to protect his reputation. The film explores themes of corruption, justice, and moral ambiguity. Known for its groundbreaking cinematography, particularly the famous opening long take, Touch of Evil is considered a masterpiece of the genre.

In 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
