11 year old Courtney Love around Christmas time in 1975 at her step father, Frank Rodriguez’s house in Portland, Oregon. Frank legally adopted Courtney when she was about 3 years old.
As a child (and this time of the photos being taken), she was constantly being shuttled between homes in New Zealand (with her mother and sisters) to Portland (with Frank). Courtney’s mother says: “I took Courtney to therapy when I was living in New Zealand; she was an insomniac. I was mad at her, and I feel so bad about that; I'd say to her, ‘If you’d just sleep at night.’ But she couldn’t, and it was horrible. They gave her sedatives at 10 years old.”
Courtney has also bitterly spoken of the “chicken coop” her mother forced her to live in behind the family home in New Zealand. Linda convinced her it was called a “whare” — a Maori hut or house. After parental frustration, Courtney was then sent to a boarding school in Nelson but only lasted a few months before she was “kicked out for being weird.” She was sent back to America, again.
While staying with her step father in Portland circa 1975, Courtney attended Laurelhurst. Someone who went to school with her in 6th grade said she went by the name Ariel Rodriguez.
