Picnics in the 1950s were a popular family activity, typically set in parks, beaches, or lakes. Families would pack food in wicker baskets or cooler boxes, and the menu often included sandwiches, fried chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, and fruit. Desserts like pies, cookies, or Jell-O were common. People dressed neatly for the occasion, with women in dresses or skirts, men in shirts and slacks, and kids in casual summer clothes. Checkered tablecloths were a classic picnic feature, evoking a nostalgic, wholesome vibe.
1950s picnics also featured portable coolers, radios for music, and outdoor games like frisbee or badminton. Station wagons were popular for transporting families and picnic gear. The era’s emphasis on family leisure and simplicity made these outings a wholesome, cherished tradition.
Here below is a set of beautiful photos that shows what picnics looked like in the 1950s.
And no piles of trash were left behind after these picnics. I'm old enough to remember when nearly everyone had a sense of community and good behavior. Good times.
