These amazing snapshots were taken by Richard Corman in the summer of 1982 — just before Madonna released her first album. They could almost be a parody, they’re so eighties — which is not to say that Madonna can’t work double denim.
“It was in the summer of 1982 at her apartment on the Lower East Side,” Corman said. “Prior to entering the building, I had to call her from a phone booth from across the street as she let me know, under no uncertain terms, that I was not to enter the building without her alerting all of the tenants due to a lot of illegal activity going on, on the stoop and on the ground floor – which she had no part in... A few minutes later, we were moving about her apartment and I was photographing her in her kitchenette, at the stove, on her desk chair.”
Richard Corman’s famous photographs of Madonna during that period have been reproduced in books, magazines, TV clips and newspapers, and are considered the most iconic images ever taken of Madonna.
Here, Madonna is just a natural beauty, youthful, confident, vulnerable, natural, and extraordinarily poised. The photographs were taken while she was on the cusp of superstardom, but still anxious, striving, going on casting calls, and waiting for her big break.
