Elvis Presley toured with the gospel/soul group The Sweet Inspirations during the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. During the earlier period, Cissy Houston was a member, which at times included famed singers Doris Troy, Dionne Warwick (then Warrick), and her sister Dee Dee. An earlier incarnation of the group sang background on Van Morrison’s classic hit, “Brown Eyed Girl.”
“Elvis loved gospel music,” Cissy talked about Elvis. “He was raised on it. And he really did know what he was talking about. He was singing gospel all the time – almost anything he did had that flavor. You can’t get away from what your roots are.”
Cissy Houston left the group after Elvis’ 1969 Vegas shows, as she felt the need to be with her young children. Her son Michael has been born in 1961, and daughter Whitney was born in 1963.
