Graf Zeppelin Passing Over Wembley Stadium During the 1930 FA Cup Final

It was on Saturday April 26, 1930 that the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin cruised over Wembley Stadium during the first half of the 1930 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Huddersfield. It was reported that the German airship “kept very low over the ground, disconcerting players and spectators alike with the deafening roar of its engines.”

At the time, the Zeppelin was the largest airship ever, at around 776ft in length. It made almost 600 flights in its career, becoming the first aircraft to travel more than a million miles, before being retired in 1937. As for the final, Herbert Chapman’s Gunners won 2-0, thanks to goals by Alex James and Jack Lambert.
