Hiker Witnesses St Helens Blow Up From Mt Adams in 1980

8:32 a.m. May 18, 1980: Mount St. Helens erupts and becomes the deadliest and most destructive volcanic eruption in U.S. history. This hiker witnessed the eruption from neighboring Mount Adams, about 37 miles (60 km) to the east. A moment captured by photographer John V. Christiansen, and published in a 1981 National Geographic magazine.
