Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney founded Atari in June 1972. Five months later, Atari’s first product, Pong, changed gaming forever. The company quickly rolled out other arcade games. In 1977, it introduced the Atari Video Computer System (VCS) and sold millions of game cartridges over 15 years.
In 1976, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell sold the company to Warner Communications. Following the video game market crash of 1983, Warner sold the home computer and video game console divisions to former Commodore founder Jack Tramiel and renamed the company Atari Corporation. Warner retained Atari’s coin-operated game division under the name Atari Games.
