In 1950, Lancia unveiled the groundbreaking Aurelia, the world’s first car with a V6 engine, at the Turin Motor Show. The Aurelia featured advanced unitary construction, all-independent suspension, and inboard brakes mounted on the combined gearbox/rear transaxle.
The sedan version was soon joined by the stylish B20 Coupé, designed by Pinin Farina. This fastback “2+2” introduced the concept of Gran Turismo, offering both sports car performance and practicality. The later series of the B20, starting in 1953, featured a 2,451cc V6 engine producing 118bhp. This engine was also used in the B24 Spider, nicknamed the “America,” which Pinin Farina designed and launched in 1954.
Considered one of Pinin Farina’s masterpieces, the Aurelia B24 Spider combined sportiness with elegant aesthetics, foreshadowing their iconic Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder. The B24 Spider had a shortened chassis, a floor-mounted gearshift, and impressive performance, reaching a top speed of approximately 115mph (185km/h).
With its clean lines, hidden door handles, curved wraparound windscreen, and distinctive split bumpers, the B24 Spider became highly coveted. Only 240 units were produced between 1954 and 1955, making it one of the most sought-after Lancias of the post-war era.
