The history of apparel manufacturing parallels the invention of factory sewing machines and the rise of a middle class to appreciate and acquire multiple articles of ever updated clothing. Coming from two complementary library divisions, the catalogs and histories in this digital presentation, which will grow over time, provide a window into the daily practices and design resources of one of the few manufacturing industries that still thrive in New York City.
These images are from “Ladies’ Dress Shoes of the Nineteenth Century” by Captain Thomas Watson Greig from the Research Library at the National Museum of Scotland. It turns out, fancy shoes have been popular item in our culture for quite some time, as this publication was issued in 1900.
