Costume designs for the opera ‘Pane altrui’ (1848) |
Turgenev wrote Pane altrui in 1848 , designed for the Russian actor Mihail Ŝepkin, neither performed nor published due to the intervention of the tsarist censorship as “immoral and full of attacks on Russian nobles, depicted therein in a contemptible aspect”.
The authorization for publication took place only in 1857 in No. 3 of the magazine Sovremennik with the title Чужой хлеб (Čužoj hleb, Pane altrui). Pane altrui’s premiere was on January 30, 1862 at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.
Here is a set of vintage photos that show costume designs for the opera Pane altrui.
