35 Wonderful Photos Show What Life of the US Looked Like in the 1960s

The 1960s was a decade when hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans gave new life to the nation's democratic ideals.

African Americans used sit-ins, freedom rides, and protest marches to fight segregation, poverty, and unemployment. Feminists demanded equal job opportunities and an end to sexual discrimination. Mexican Americans protested discrimination in voting, education, and employment. Native Americans demanded that the government recognize their land claims and the right of tribes to govern themselves. Environmentalists demanded legislation to control the amount of pollution released into the environment.

  1. Correction: the locomotive pictured is from the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Burlington Northern (CB&Q merged with three other railroads) didn't come along until 1970.

  2. Nice photos. I remember these days; people tried to look presentable, were usually polite, and took pride in their neighborhood. Kids were encouraged to play outside from dawn to dusk, and schools focused on academics. Good times.

  3. While the photos appear wholesome, many people in the 60's didn't like African Americans period. No swimming allowed white only hotels the list goes on and on. In many ways a very difficult time for Blacks. Let's not forget that.
