Born 1931 as David Harold Meyer in Naponee, Nebraska, American actor David Janssen had his first film part at the age of thirteen, and by the age of twenty-five he had appeared in twenty films and served two years as an enlisted man in the United States Army.
Janssen is best known for his starring role as Richard Kimble in the television series The Fugitive (1963–1967). He also had the title roles in three other series: Richard Diamond, Private Detective; O’Hara, U.S. Treasury and Harry O. In 1996, TV Guide ranked him number 36 on its 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list.
Janssen was a heavy drinker who smoked up to four packs of cigarettes a day. He died from a sudden heart attack in the early morning of February 13, 1980, at his beachfront home in Malibu, California, at the age of 48.
For his contribution to the television industry, David Janssen has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located on the 7700 block of Hollywood Boulevard. These vintage photos captured his portraits in the 1960s.
