Before there were pet selfies, there were portraits of pet dressing up as human.
During the early years of photographic technology, photographs were treasured keepsakes that were usually taken in commercial studios on rare occasions. The use of this modern and expensive technology to capture portraits of pets really speaks volumes about the changing status of animals during the late nineteenth century.
