Stunning Photos of Marilyn Monroe During the Making of ‘The Seven Year Itch’ in 1954

The Seven Year Itch is a 1955 American romantic comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starred Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell. It is an adaptation of a hit Broadway show of the same name. The film tells the story of Richard Sherman (played by Ewell), a middle-aged book editor who encounters an attractive young woman (played by Monroe) after his family left Manhattan for the summer. Sherman begins to spend time with her but at the same time is constantly wracked with nerves as he tries to control his libido. Finally, beset by guilt and fear, he decides to escape the situation and join his family in Maine.

Even though there were problems on set forcing the film to exceed its budget, it was quite profitable in the long run and was a box office success in 1955.

The Seven Year Itch contains one of the most iconic pop-culture images of the 20th century – Monroe standing on a subway grate as her white dress is blown upwards by a passing train. The titular phrase, which refers to a waning interest in monogamous relationship after seven years of marriage, has been used by psychologists.

Take a look back at Monroe on the set of the film through these stunning pictures taken by Sam Shaw and George S. Zimbel:
