A new fire brick, one-third the weight of a standard brick of the same size, and light enough to float on water, was expected to revolutionize the brick industry in 1934. Robert F. Martin of Philadelphia was the inventor.
Jeannie Manush and Rose Richie frolic about in pool with new floating bricks, which are even lighter than wood. Tiny air cells make new bricks very good heat insulators. |
Smaller foundations will be possible in brick buildings, since the dead weight of the walls is cut in three. Handling costs will be much less.
Brick buildings should now be even less susceptible to changes in temperature. The many tiny air cells in the new material are almost perfect insulators of heat, making for lower home heating costs in winter.
