Founded in 1912, Universal is the oldest surviving film studio in the United States and the oldest member of Hollywood’s “Big Five” studios in terms of the overall film market. Over the years the studio has given us numerous memorable movies and creations.
In 1963, the year before the famous Universal Studios tour officially opened, LIFE photographer John Dominis had a chance to take his own personal journey around the lot, and his pictures proved that his visit was nothing short of a surreal dream.
From extras in colorful costumes to the likes of the stars of the silver screen such as Cary Grant and of Gregory Peck in everyday life, take a look back at the Universal Studio lot in 1963 through these fascinating photos taken by Dominis:

ReplyDeleteIron Eyes Cody was an actor portraying a Native American. He was born in Sicily, and was an Italian. He took on the persona of an American Indian but he had no American ties other than through immigration. The actors at the lunch counter probably knew his costume was part of his act, he wasn't who he tried to be, and didn't care for him enough to be concerned that he was left without a seat. In a dining room filled with posers trying to look like a cowboy, Iron Eyes Cody was the biggest imposter and the least deserving of comfort at lunch.
