On October 1 1983, Madonna appeared on her first magazine cover for Island, shot by Curtis Knapp. The black and white cover image stands out from the many other Madonna photographs of the era due to its minimalist feel, focusing solely on Madonna’s facial features.
“Honestly, she was very focused on her idea of her,” Knapp recalled. “But at that time, that day, we just had fun and worked on taking good pics.”
Styled by her friend Maripol, she opted for a dramatic pose clearly inspired by Edward Steichen’s famous 1928 portrait of Greta Garbo — Madonna’s first homage! Inside, she said her oldest fantasies were to be Nancy Sinatra or a nun.
Queen!
