Vintage Photographs Captured Daily Life at a Local Pub in Leiston, Suffolk in 1966

These photographs were taken by American-born Libby Hall in the 1960s when she worked at Summerhill School as she attempted to capture small-town life. The photos show us a slice of life just before the economy of Suffolk and of the country as a whole was about to change.

In 1966, the Sizewell power station in Suffolk placed its neighboring village Leiston at the heart of Britain’s nuclear power ambitions. Photographer Libby Hall documented the local pub, the Engineer, during the village’s turning point. With her frank documentary style, Hall captured the workers as they clock off and head for a drink at the Engineer.
