These photographs of Carlisle were taken by John J. Brady when he was studying art at Carlisle college in 1975.
Carlisle is the largest settlement in the county of Cumbria. Located 8 miles south of the Scottish border, it is nicknamed the Great Border City. Carlisle today is the main cultural, commercial and industrial center in the Borderlands. It is home to the main campuses of the University of Cumbria and a variety of museums and heritage centers.
“I obviously hadn’t mastered the camera and light meter combo that I’d borrowed from the college and the original negatives are in a poor state,” said Brady. “But the images capture a place in time.”
