Celia Hammond and Pattie Boyd in Pierre Cardin Helmets, Photographed by John French, 1965

John French (1907–1966) was an English fashion and portrait photographer. Born in London, French was instrumental in recording the fashion boom of his home city in the 1950s and ’60s, photographing all the most famous faces of his day.

Known for his impeccably lit, chic set-ups, French encouraged newspaper editors to cover fashion in their pages, and worked to create low-contrast images with natural lighting that could be reliably reproduced in newsprint. His archive of negatives, contact prints and press cuttings, the result of over 10,000 sittings, is held at the V&A.
