30 Old Portrait Photos of Manila Ladies From the Early 20th Century

Manila is the capital of the Philippines, and its second most populous city. It is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay, on the island of Luzon. The Pasig River flows through the middle of the city, dividing it into the north and south sections.

Manila became autonomous with the passage of Republic Act No. 409, “The Revised Charter of the City of Manila,” on June 18, 1949. Manila is the second most natural-disaster-afflicted capital city in the world after Tokyo. Nevertheless, it is among the most populous and fastest growing cities in Southeast Asia.

The term “Manila” is commonly used to refer to the whole metropolitan area, the greater metropolitan area or the city proper. The officially defined metropolitan area, called Metro Manila, the “capital region” of the Philippines, also includes the much larger Quezon City and the Makati Central Business District. It is the most populous region in the country, one of the most populous urban areas in the world, and is one of the wealthiest regions in Southeast Asia.

Here below is a set of old photos from John Tewell that shows portraits of Manila ladies from between the 1910s and 1930s.

  1. One of my first comments on this site was to ask "Is this where I am supposed to type 'shut up you moron'"?

The comment was deleted despite my obviously humorous intent, but my question about the nature of the comment remains unanswered. Is it a joke? Is it a spammer? Is it the admin of the site trying to generate interest?
It is confusing to me because if it was a joke, why would they delete my comment laughing at it? If it was the admin, why would they keep deleting it? And if it was a spammer, why would they allow it to continue? Blogger has anti-spam measures that can be taken, and they are quite effective.

It just makes no sense to me. It must be said though, that a lot of things this site does makes no sense to me. So maybe that is why I tend to think it is just some hairbrained idea the admin is using to try generating interest. I did notice that the posting rate of the galleries and the posting rate of the "shut ups" increased dramatically several days ago, but find it odd that they happened at the exact same time.

Whatever the case may be, it is retarded thru and thru. The posts, the response to them, everything. The whole thing puts a cast on the place and I can't imagine that it is not driving people away.

    1. Sorry but Google or Blogger didn't let us block these spammers. They don't have a way to do it. They only block readers who commented with links. That's why sometimes we must moderate the comment section to keep these spammers out of our site. Thanks.

    2. By the way we never did these "Shut up..." comments, and we no need to do it. We still didn't know who are they and why they did it. We just try to moderate the spam comments at our best.

  2. I have a blogger site, and there are many scripts you can add to your code that will block specific IPs from posting, or specific usernames. A simple Google search, some cut and paste, and you are done. Sorry, but I have a hard time believing that you want this spam (if that is what it is) to stop when it is that easy to do.

For that matter, it costs less than $100 a year to host a site like this on its own domain, which would give you even more control over it. I am not trying to tell you what to do with your own site, I am just pointing out that given the easy options available to you, it is very hard to believe you are interested in getting rid of the "shut up" comments at all. That in turn makes it hard to believe that it is not you behind them. Especially given the fact that he is using your name, something that blogger does address specifically on its support pages.

    1. I thank you so much Rensselaer, I read all your comments, even deleted comments. Sorry! Because we don't have much knowledge about web coding, that's why we are using this Blogger platform. We once used Disqus but it also loaded a lot of ads. So, I think I'll find a way soon.

      Thanks.

    2. You are beating a dead horse, my friend. This used to be a popular site. When the users offered suggestions as to what they would like to see (accurate headlines, literate English descriptions, photo credit to the image sources, etc.) the requests went unheeded. So gradually people just stopped coming here in favor of other vintage photo sites, and this site became the one that gets made fun of.
In looking just at the Alexa stats, it is clear that the decline of this site is continuing.

Additionally, for whatever it is worth, the owner of this site has previously faced sanctions both by Blogger/Google and by Facebook for violations of the TOS, including making duplicate sites to avoid bans. So he has good reason not to ask for Blogger's help for anything...to do so would draw their attention to himself and likely result in more sanctions.

In short, there are very good reasons why this site is in the state it finds itself, and if you are thinking that anything is going to change now, you are kidding yourself.

  3. Actually, each period's fashion has certain characteristics. The images have been around for a long time but still show the creativity of current fashion.
