On January 27, 1928 in an experimental fleet exercise, the rigid airship Los Angeles (ZR-3) moored to USS Saratoga’s stern transferred passengers and took on fuel and stores.
USS Los Angeles was a rigid airship, designated ZR-3, which was built in 1923–1924 by the Zeppelin company in Friedrichshafen, Germany, as war reparation. It was delivered to the United States Navy in October 1924 and after being used mainly for experimental work, particularly in the development of the American parasite fighter program, was decommissioned in 1932.

I don't think that this photo is legitimate. She did moor to the stern; there's video of that, but the two linked like this isn't documented and there's no video. The operation would have been to dangerous to attempt.
ReplyDeleteAny pictures of the airship on the stern of Saratoga?

ReplyDeleteI can't see the whole airship landing on the carrier. Too much danger of hitting the funnel.
