Vintage Photos of Tyrone Power As the Masked Vigilante in ‘The Mark of Zorro’

The Mark of Zorro is a 1940 Spanish Western adventure film about Don Diego Vega (Tyrone Power), a young Spanish aristocrat who, in order to restore justice to his native land, has to masquerade as a fop to conceal his secret identity of Zorro, the notorious masked vigilante.

The film is based on the 1919 novel The Curse of Capistrano written by Johnston McCulley. It was also a sound remake of the 1920 smash hit silent film of the same name starring Douglas Fairbanks as Zorro. The Mark of Zorro was nominated for a Best Original Score Oscar at the 13th Academy Awards.

Basil Rathbone, who starred as Captain Esteban Pasquale opposite Power, was a well-known champion fencer in real life. Upon being asked about his co-star’s skill during their dueling scenes in which stunt doubles were not used, Rathbone recalled, “Power was the most agile man with a sword I’ve ever faced before a camera. Tyrone could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat.”
