The ‘60s was a hugely successful decade of Diahann Carroll’s career. In 1962, she became the first African-American woman to win the Tony Award for best actress for her performance in the Broadway musical No Strings. However, it was not until she was cast as the leading role in the television series Julia (1968) that Carroll finally became a bona fide star.
The series was considered a significant milestone, both in Carroll’s career and the medium, as it was the first on American television to star an African-American woman in a non-stereotypical role. Carroll’s titular role in Julia won her the 1968 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress In a Television Series and earned her an Emmy nomination in 1969.
