Gorgeous Photos of Paul Newman in ‘Cool Hand Luke’

Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 prison drama film based on Donn Pearce’s 1965 novel of the same name. The film starred Paul Newman in the title role as Luke, a “free spirit” prisoner in a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system and constantly defies the authorities of the facility. To prepare for his character, Newman traveled to West Virginia to record local accents and examine people’s behavior.

Upon its release, the film received positive reviews. Newman’s performance was praised by critics, which firmly established his status as one of the top actors of the era. The film received four Oscar nominations at the 40th Academy Award, including Best Actor for Paul Newman.
