Victorian Ladies With a Battlesden Car, circa 1897

A rather comical photograph of four Victorian ladies and a Battlesden Car. Two ladies sit in the carriage whilst two act as the horse power and hold the shafts. An amusing photograph!

A Battlesden Car is a dog cart variant which is usually lower than most other variants and is identified by the characteristic curved lines of the body.

A Battlesden Car is a useful sort of carriage as it can seat two or four people back to back. It is lightweight and has an unusual and eyecatching profile with the semi circular shaped wings over the wheels. The floor of this carriage is fairly low to the ground making it easy to get in and out of.

They were favored by the ladies as their design was thought to be flattering and the extra long splashguards offered more protection against ladies getting their skirts dirty on the wheels.
