In the 1950s, Rodgers and Hammerstein signed with CBS for a TV adaptation of Cinderella. Julie Andrews, who was then appearing in My Fair Lady on Broadway, got the leading role, as she had already signed with the network and her talent made quite an impression on Rodgers. “What sold us immediately was the chance to work with Julie,” recalled the composer in his autobiography.
The musical adaptation was broadcast live on March 31, 1957, in both black and white and compatible color. An estimated 107 million viewers tuned in to CBS to watch the 90-minute program. For her performance as the protagonist, Andrews received an Emmy nomination.
