Genevieve Naylor was an American photographer and photojournalist. She switched from painting to photography after attending an exhibit by photographer Berenice Abbott, who would later become her tutor in 1935.
Her professional career began in 1937 when she worked for the Associated Press and became one of the first female photojournalists to be hired by any American news wire services. Additionally, her photographs also appeared in other magazines including LIFE and TIME.
Naylor’s works of Brazil on assignment for the U.S. State Department were presented in a solo exhibition at the New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which made her the second female photographer to be given a one-woman show.
She was also a well-known fashion photographer and spent 15 years working with Harper’s Bazaar. Her work in the fashion world also appeared in Vogue, Good Housekeeping, McCall’s, and Cosmopolitan.
