Ray K. Metzker was one of the great masters of American photography. Over a career that spanned five decades, Metzker emerged as the pioneer of a new visual idiom and made numerous influential photographs. His work began to gather attention and critical acclaim, notably from Edward Steichen, after obtaining a master’s degree from the Institute of Design in 1959.

Composites, multiple-exposures, superimpositions of negatives, juxtapositions of images, solarization, and other formal means were the characteristics of his unique techniques. In Metzker’s work, the potentials and boundaries of black and white photography were pushed beyond the formal possibilities. The Museum of Modern Art in New York offered him his first solo show in 1967.
