Vintage Photos of “Six Grandfathers” Before It Was Carved Into What Most Americans Now Call “Mount Rushmore”

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60 foot sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents’ faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941. Mount Rushmore has become an iconic symbol of the United States, and attracts over three million visitors annually.

For anyone curious, here’s what Six Grandfathers looked like before they defiled it by carving a bunch of old men into it.

  2. "Defiled"?? Yeah, the same way Michaelangelo defiled that chunk of marble to sculpt David, and the way that DaVinci defiled that canvas with paint to create the Mona Lisa.

For the sake of logical consistency, Khanh should declare all art to be defilement and close this website, because it only exists to glorify and appreciate that defilement.

But he won't because he doesn't have the intellectual capacity for recognizing logical inconsistency, even with the above examples.

    1. Couldn't agree more! If Mount Rushmore was defiled by the carvings of our greatest presidents, are the Black Hills defiled by the equally large sized carving of Crazy Horse!

    2. Disgusting. It was 'defiled' because it was sacred land to the Lakota that were there long, long before white people came and started killing them and taking their land. It was land promised to them in the Treaty at Fort Laramie before the treaty was violated and they were forced out when gold was found in the area. Then, after they were forced out of the area that their people had been in for who knows how long, their sacred mountain had the faces carved into it of people largely resopnsible for their persecution.

Fuck These colonists. They have amassed a colossal Universal debt for all of their transgressions against the rightful inheritors of the land, and these Genetic Mutations will most certainly Pay. I believe the mortals in this realm call it Karma.

  4. Never thought about the impact of this until reading about what the mountain used to be before. Imagine looking up at a beautiful face of a natural creation you call “6 Grandfathers” and then all of a sudden people come and chop it up to bits. I am an American, and I am rethinking a lot of what we read in our textbooks.
