A Streetcar Named Desire is a 1951 drama film, adapted from Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 play. Elia Kazan, who directed the Broadway stage production, also directed the black and white film adaptation.
The film starred Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, with the last three were all cast in their original Broadway roles, while Leigh appeared in the first London theatre production under the direction of her then-husband Laurence Olivier. It was the fifth biggest box office hit of 1951 and drew high praises upon release.
It was this film that brought Marlon Brando to major Hollywood stardom and earned him his first of four consecutive Oscar nominations for Best Leading Actor. At the 24th Academy Awards, it set an Oscar record to become the first film to win in three acting categories for Leading Actress (Leigh), Supporting Actor (Malden) and Supporting Actress (Hunter); its fourth win was Art Direction.
