Judgment at Nuremberg is a 1961 legal drama that depicts a fictionalized version of Judge’s Trial of 1947. The film was directed by Stanley Kramer, written by Abby Mann and featured some of the best-known faces of Hollywood, including Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Maximilian Schell, Montgomery Clift, William Shatner and Werner Klemperer, in roles that were different from those in which they were usually seen. Many of the big-name actors chose to appear in the film for a fraction of their usual salaries because they believed in the importance of the subject matter.
The film was nominated for eleven categories at the 34th Academy Awards, with Schell won the Oscar for Best Leading Actor and Mann won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This is one of only seven films to receive multiple nominations for Best Leading Actor, with both Tracy and Schell getting nominated. The remaining categories were for Best Picture, Best Director (Stanley Kramer), Best Leading Actor (Spencer Tracy), Best Supporting Actor (Montgomery Clift), Best Supporting Actress (Judy Garland), Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
