40 Beautiful Photos of Shelley Fabares in the 1960s

Born on January 19, 1944 in Santa Monica, California, American actress and singer Shelley Fabares began acting at age three and at age 10, made her television debut in an episode of Letter to Loretta, “The Clara Schuman Story” (1954). During the 1960s, Fabares epitomized the wholesome, picture-perfect “girl-next-door” teen idol of American pop culture. Combining a sweet demeanor with immense charm, she successfully conquered television, the music charts, and the silver screen during the decade.

Fabares played Mary Stone, the wholesome teenage daughter of Donna Reed’s character, on the ABC sitcom The Donna Reed Show (1958–1966). She was a main cast member from the start through the fifth season (leaving full-time around 1963 as the character went to college) and made occasional guest appearances afterward.

The role made her one of the most visible young performers on television and the quintessential TV “daughter” of the era—pretty, level-headed, and girl-next-door. She and co-star Paul Petersen (who played her brother Jeff) became extremely popular with teen audiences. Fabares later described Donna Reed as a second mother and role model.

Capitalizing on her TV fame, Fabares recorded for Colpix Records. Her debut single, “Johnny Angel” (written by Lyn Duddy and Lee Pockriss, produced by Stu Phillips), was introduced on a 1962 episode of The Donna Reed Show. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1962, sold over a million copies (gold-certified), and is regarded as a classic early-1960s girl-group-style pop record. Session musicians included Glen Campbell on guitar and backing vocals by Darlene Love and the Blossoms.

Follow-up singles included “Johnny Loves Me” (a sequel, peaking at No. 21) and “The Things We Did Last Summer” (No. 46). She released albums such as Shelley! (1962) and The Things We Did Last Summer (1962), plus Teenage Triangle (1963). She recorded for a few more years but never matched the success of “Johnny Angel”; she later said she never saw herself primarily as a singer.

After reducing her role on the sitcom, Fabares moved into features, often in youth-oriented or “fun-in-the-sun” movies. She also made guest appearances on series such as The Twilight Zone, Mr. Novak, and others during the decade.

Fabares married record producer Lou Adler in the mid-1960s (the marriage later ended in divorce). Her clean-cut, wholesome image fit the early 1960s perfectly but became less aligned with cultural shifts toward the end of the decade, contributing to a quieter period in her career until the early 1970s.
